Bolivian government wants to bring András Kepes to justice

Monday, April 27, 2009

The Bolivian government will start a diplomatic procedure against András Kepes to bring him to justice for keeping an essential information secret that threatened the territorial integrity of Bolivia. The government is referring to the secretly recorded Flores interview produced by Kepes and had been broadcasted in the Hungarian television, on April 21, 2009.

Juan Ramón Quintana the minister of governmental affairs said " We are going to base our procedure on the convention of international terrorism, in order to bring András Kepes to justice".

András Kepes said he had done nothing wrong by not releasing the information. "The job of the journalist is to document events, uncover background information rather than shape them," said Kepes. The killing of Flores and his associates indicated that Bolivian authorities had known about Flores' activities and learned them from other sources, said Kepes.

When he was asked about the possibility of reporting the information to authorities, he said "When the information is not about preparing a criminal act journalists have the obligation to keep that information confidential just as doctors or lawyers do it".
