Fear and trembling: the Fidesz chickened out of the EP candidates debate

Thursday, June 4, 2009

There won't be an all candidates debate because the opposition Fidesz backed out of the negotiations where organizers tried to hammer out the rules of the presentation. According to organizers, the opposition Fidesz was splitting hairs just to find reason to get his candidate out of the contest.

It was Lajos Bokros, the EP candidate of MDF that invited all party candidates for an open television debate. Krisztina Morvai immediately accepted the challenge, but the MSZP and the Fidesz were reluctant. Finally, they have also agreed but soon after started arguing about trivialities like the personality of the moderator and things like that.

According to party organizers, it was evident right from the beginning that the opposition Fidesz was looking for reasons to withdraw from the challenge. They were terrified by letting their candidate face off with a formidable speaker like Krisztina Morvai.
