Mass demonstration for the release of political prisoners [UPDATED]

There will be a mass demonstration on July 4, at 5 pm., on Szabadság tér, in Budapest to demand the release of political prisoners. The demonstration is organized by HVIM and so far, more than fourteen organizations indicated their participation.

At the same time, the Erdély chapter of HVIM will also demonstrate, in Csikszerda, in front of the Hungarian Embassy.

Also, there is a donation drive under way to help the families of political prisoners.

In a bizarre change of mind, police banned the sympathy demonstration organized by patriotic organizations for July 4th to demand the release of political prisoners kept in jail under false pretext by the regime that start resembling more to a Stalinist dictatorship than a democratic government.

According to police statement, all gatherings in Szabadság tér and the surrounding area are banned. Police will be on high alert, on July 4 in the city of Budapest.

This blatant violation of trust comes in the face of an agreement that already have been hammered out by organizers and authorities.

HVIM said that the demonstration go ahead as planned.

It is clear that the regime is planning a provocation.

So far, more than fourteen organizations joined the demonstration, including the recently banned Hungarian Guard that promised to be there in full force but in civilian clothing.

Organizers are calling all citizens to bring cameras and other devices to record all violations of the law by police that by now, resembles more to a private security firm than a police force.

The event will be closely watched by human rights organizations as well.

Police refined its previous statement about the July 4th demonstration. The newest version is that they neither banned not approved the protest. HVIM said activists will distribute copies of the permit during the demonstration. The contradictory statements by police indicating that they might have received a last minute order from the government.

The Hungarian Guard also released a statement indicating that it will join the demonstration wearing uniform.
