Natasa Janics: birthday party postponed

Thursday, June 25, 2009

Natasa Janics is 27 years old. She is one of the most successful female athletes in the Hungarian kenoeing sport. Currently, she is in Brandenburg, in Germany, competing in the European Sprint Championships.

So far, Natasa won three Olympic gold medals; in the 500-meter flatwater solo and two-person kayak races at the Athens Games. In Peking, she and Katalin Kovács repeated their Gold medal winning performance in Kayak Doubles (K2) 500m.

“She is also a 12-time gold medalist in seven different events at the world championships, most recently winning gold in the 200-meter solo kayak in 2007. She won an astounding six gold medals in two- and four-person events at the 2006 worlds, accompanied each time by Kovács. In their home country, the duo led Hungary to a sweep of all nine flatwater women’s kayak events. She was named the 2004 Hungarian sportswoman of the year”.

She was born in Bácskapalánk, in Yugoslavia, currently belonging to Serbia. She is the daughter of the late Milan Janic that won a silver medal for Yugoslavia in the 1,000-meter solo kayak at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.

She was still a teenager when her father brought her to Hungary to train under the star coach Katalin Rozsnyói. After the Athens Games her relationship with her coach got so bad that she left Katalin Rozsnyói for good. The actual cause of the break is not clear even today. Ever since Natasa has been training with László Kovács in Szeged.

Other than that, things are going very well for Natasa. She's just received a new home from the city of Szeged as an appreciation to her outstanding contribution to the sport. And she is in love too. She is planning to marry to her boyfriend on September 12.

Happy birthday Natasa.
