Friday, November 6, 2009

This year, Dr. Gábor Papp who completed his medical studies in 2008, has received the Tóth Ilona memorial plaquette the “Tóth Ilona Foundation” gives to a young doctor in each year. Mária Wittner, a veteran of the 1956 revolution also participated in the ceremony. She accused the regime of trying to desecrate the memory of Ilona Tóth, the martyr of the 1956 revolution.

Ilona Tóth was a medical student during the revolution and active in the resistance even after the Soviet army put down the revolt. She worked as a doctor in various hospitals treating the wounded, helping food distribution and handing out propaganda leaflets after the Soviet invasion.

After the revolution, Kádár's henchmen arrested and tortured her and in 1957, at the tender age of 24, she was executed with hundreds of other patriots. She is now part of the “Pesti Srácok” (The youngsters of Budapest) legend; they came from every parts of the city to fight almost with bare hands against the invading Soviet army, in the last days of the revolution.

Her heroism and martyrdom forever burnt into national consciousness, despite the fact that the current treasonous regime doing its best to dishonor her memory.
