The Hungarian Democratic Forum, responsible for the disastrous transfer of power from communism to democracy and for the corruption ridden privatization of the national assets has chosen Lajos Bokros, and Gyorgy Habsburg as its candidates for the next European Election. Lajos Bokros was the architect of the most brutal austerity measures the government introduced during the Horn administration.
The party, a shadow of its former self, today consists of a bunch of opportunists led by Ibolya David (picture), the minister of justice in the former Orban government.
The police arrested a former gypsy police officer for the murder of two members of a family. In the last year, the police officer threw a hand grenade in a house where two members of a gypsy family died in the attack. The motive was revenge.
Then, the government sponsored media suggested (without any evidence) that the attack might have been a racist outbreak of hatred by belligerent elements of the patriotic movement. Once again, the mainstream media showed how low they can sink when it comes to “objective” reporting.
In the last year, in the small town of Kiskunlachaza, a 14 year old student, Nóri Horák, was raped and brutally murdered by unknown assailants as she was walking home from a party. Then, the police was optimistic about the prospects of catching the culprits quickly. But recently, authorities admitted that they didn't have hot leads and as a result, they offered 11 million forint for information leading to the arrest of the criminals.
Local sources are suggesting that the murder might have been committed by gypsy criminals and the police knows their identities but covers up the information for fear of an anti-gypsy backlash in the majority of the population.
In a recent poll by the Median, Jobbik, The Movement for a Better Hungary, has become the third most preferred party among decided voters, behind the Fidesz and the Socialists, with 4 percent of the popular vote. The Fidesz is leading the poll by 63 percent and the Socialists are second with 25 percent.
The totally discredited Hungarian police chief, Jozsef Bencze, the right hand man of the mentally unstable Hungarian Prime Minister, Ferenc Gyurcsany, admitted to the stop.hu news portal that indeed the gypsy crime families of Enying exist. Members of these families and some associated gangsters murdered Marian Cozma. Previously, the police denied their existence.
The police chief also admitted that in the ominous night when Marian Cozma was murdered by a gang of gypsies, four off-duty police officers were in the disco but none of them interfered or called the police.
Today, the police laid charges against a 22 year old gypsy for murder. In the last year, in the small town of Gadna, in Borsod county, the accused broke into the home of a 88 year old woman and brutally raped her; then, he stabbed her several times, gouged her eyes out and chopped her body up with an ax.
The Hungarian News Agency, MTI, released an expert opinion about the possible motives behind the murder of father and son that took place in Tatarszentgyorgy.
The last week, in the small town of Tatarszentgyorgy a someone threw a molotov cocktail on a house owned by a gypsy family. As the occupants escaped from the burning house, a man and his 5 year of son was gunned down by unknown assailants. Police still investigating the case but so far haven't found any evidence about the motives of the crime or the identities of the assailants. These are the meager facts that we know at this moment.
But the lack of evidence didn't prevent the well-respected criminologist to relate a fairy tale story about the tragedy.
He said small groups of belligerent racists, about 3-4 persons in each group criss-crossing the country, looking for gypsies to kill. They pick their targets randomly. The form of attacks includes throwing molotov cocktails on houses and as the occupants escaping from the flames shooting them.
According to the "expert", the chances of catching the criminals are very slim. The crime scene is most of the time devastated by fire making impossible to collect evidence. The only way the criminals could be caught is by chance or if they get into an accident on the road. Or perhaps, if gypsies spot and lynch them.
It is important to make the public aware of the difficulties involved investigating these crimes so that citizens can understand the obstacles involved arresting the criminals.
And the rest is up to the imagination of the reader!

“My father was a small farmer...my mother is the daughter of a Greek-Catholic priest...I studied theology; I received my second diploma in theology. As a child, I received first communion and was confirmed, likewise my three daughters; we are believers.” -Krisztina Morvai
Krisztina Morvai was born in Budapest, in 1963. She completed her high school education in the ELTE Apáczai Csere János High School majoring in Biology and Latin. After finishing high school, she enrolled in the Eötvös Loránd University Law Faculty where she received her "cum laude" degree in law, in 1987. In 1989, she went to the United Kingdom and earned her Master of Law degree from the University of London. Between 1993-1994, she taught law at the University of Wisconsin. In 1995, she joined to the Strasbourg Human Rights Committee as a legal expert. Between 2002-2006, she worked for the CEDAW, a United Nations Agency fighting for the elimination of all forms of discrimination. Currently, she is a professor of law at the Eötvös Loránd University.
She is married and the mother of three daughters.
Krisztina Morvai is a relative newcomer to the Hungarian political scene. The first time, her name got a familiar underpinning was during the 2006 civil unrest. As a result of the admission of lying by Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany, a popular unrest swept through the country. Ferenc Gyurcsany admitted that the government in fact, did nothing during the past couple of years but lied. "No country in Europe has been so blatant. We obviously lied through the past one and a half to two years. And meanwhile, we didn't do a thing for four years -- nothing. We lied in the morning, we lied in the evening.'' said the cynical Prime Minister.
As the unrest spread, the government ordered the police to put down the protest by force. During this period atrocities, by the magnitude haven't seen since the 1956 revolution had been committed by the police against the demonstrators. In the clashes many prominent politicians and human rights activists were injured. Krisztina Morvai and her daughters were also victimized by the indiscriminate police attack; they had to seek the protection of a building from the teargas and the rubber bullets the police used against demonstrators.
In the wake of the 2006 unrest, she and other legal experts formed a group called the The Foundation for Legal Defense of Hungarians’ Rights. The group co-chaired by Krisztina Morvai, aimed at investigating the violations of the law by the government and the police during the 2006 unrest.
The Foundation for Legal Defense of Hungarians’ Rights uncovered and documented a great number of human rights violations. A 252 page report was later released to the public. In the report, legal experts made Ferenc Gyurcsany, the Prime Minister of Hungary, responsible for the injuries, for the unlawful imprisonment of hundreds of protesters and for the excessive use of force by the police. As one of the founders of The Foundation for Legal Defense of Hungarians’ Rights, Ms. Morvai became a household name in the country.
On March 15, 2008, Ms. Morvai and Tamas Gaudi-Nagy, also a lawyer of The Foundation for Legal Defense of Hungarians’ Rights organization, were present at the Blaha Lujza Square where enthusiastic young people celebrated the anniversary of the 1848 revolution. After the celebration, a group of protesters left for the Opera House where Ferenc Gyurcsany and his government celebrated the anniversary of revolution. At some point during the march, police charged the protesters and as a result, the peaceful demonstration turned into a violent clash with police.
Ms. Morvai also protested against the notorious statement by Simon Perez, the Prime Minister of Israel, according to which Israel has already bought up Manhattan, Poland and Hungary.
In this year, Ms. Morvai accepted the offer of Jobbik to lead the party's EP Election campaign. Jobbik is a patriotic organization founded by young people, most of them born after the collapse of communism or were just children during the final years of the communist dictatorship.
Ever since, Ms. Morvai has been tirelessly campaigning for the rights of Hungarians. She tours the country on a regular basis providing support to the dispirited population suffering from ever increasing crime and poverty.
More details have been revealed about the circumstances surrounding the murder of Marian Cozma. Today, the chief of police, József Bencze, indirectly confirmed the rumors that indeed there were police officers in the Veszprem disco during the night when gypsies assaulted a group of handball players. The police chief said, "We have already questioned the police witnesses."
It also turned out that a judge was also present during the brawl. The police chief didn't specify in what capacity the police officers were there. There are rumors that at least, one of the police officers belonged to the gypsy gang.
When a crime is committed in the presence of an off duty police officer, the officer has to transfer himself into an on duty authority and act accordingly. This didn't happen during that night.
A judge explained that an authoritative measure is required from a police officer if the circumstances are such that he, in his capacity is able to start and finish a procedure successfully. In the disco, criminals outnumbered the police officers and this might have prevented the officers to act according to the rules.
This implies that citizens cannot rely on the police in need of crisis. If officers can interpret a crime scene according to vague criteria no one can ever be sure that when needed police will protect them.
Give me back my broken night
my mirrored room, my secret life
it's lonely here,
there's no one left to torture
Give me absolute control
over every living soul
And lie beside me, baby,
that's an order!
Give me crack and anal sex
Take the only tree that's left
stuff it up the hole
in your culture
Give me back the Berlin wall
give me Stalin and St Paul
I've seen the future, brother:
it is murder.
Things are going to slide, slide in all directions
Won't be nothing
Nothing you can measure anymore
The blizzard, the blizzard of the world
has crossed the threshold
and it has overturned
the order of the soul
When they said REPENT REPENT
I wonder what they meant
When they said REPENT REPENT
I wonder what they meant
When they said REPENT REPENT
I wonder what they meant.
You don't know me from the wind
you never will, you never did
I was the little jew
who wrote the Bible
I've seen the nations rise and fall
I've heard their stories, heard them all
but love's the only engine of survival
Your servant here, he has been told
to say it clear, to say it cold:
It's over, it ain't going
And now the wheels of heaven stop
you feel the devil's RIDING crop
Get ready for the future:
it is murder.
Things are going to slide ...
There'll be the breaking of the ancient
Your private life will suddenly explode
There'll be phantoms
There'll be fires on the road
and a white man dancing
You'll see a woman
hanging upside down
her features covered by her fallen gown
and all the lousy little poets
tryin' to sound like Charlie Manson
and the white man dancin'.
Give me back the Berlin wall
Give me Stalin and St Paul
Give me Christ
or give me Hiroshima
Destroy another fetus now
We don't like children anyhow
I've seen the future, baby:
it is murder.
Things are going to slide ...
When they said REPENT REPENT ...
Olympic canoe gold medal winner, Attila Vajda (picture) got the Sportsman of the Year award for 2009. The Trainer of the Year award went to Dénes Kemény, the trainer of the Hungarian gold medal winner water polo team. The Sports Administrator of the Year award was given to the president of the Hungarian Olympic Committee, Pál Schmitt.
The stop.hu Hungarian news portal investigated and found more shocking information about the circumstances surrounding the murder of Marian Cozma. The portal managed to get hold of parts of the autopsy report according to which the murder of Marian Cozma was in fact, a professional execution.
Describing the stabbing wound, the medical examiner reported that the knife entered into the heart from the front and between two ribs; the wound was about 20 cm deep. This could have been done only if someone held Marian Cozma from behind or he was already doubled up from previous stabbings. Also, the fact that the knife entered into the heart between the two ribs presupposes a strong force that only well-built and experienced person could have executed. The autopsy also found that the knife was turned in the heart a few times.
The agony of Marian Cozma must have been very short; he might have lost his consciousness after the third heartbeats and probably bled to death within a few seconds from the massive injury.
The medical team tried to keep him alive but by the time the ambulance arrived into the hospital (which is only 200 meters from the disco), his heart stopped and was clinically dead.
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Latvia's coalition government collapsed Friday, plunging the Baltic country into political turbulence at a time when its economy is mired in a severe crisis and investors are increasingly concerned about the situation in Eastern Europe.
President Valdis Zatlers said he has accepted the resignations of Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis and his administration, according to media reports.
Godmanis said his position had become untenable after his two main coalition partners failed to support him earlier Friday, the BBC reported. The capital Riga was rocked by protests over economic policy in January, and Godmanis subsequently survived a Feb. 3 parliamentary vote of confidence, according to the report.
The government collapse in Latvia comes only weeks after Iceland's government resigned over the devastating crisis that has wrecked the island nation's economy. In Ukraine, the finance minister quit last week over economic policy disagreements with the prime minister.
Like crisis-hit Ukraine and Iceland, Latvia was forced to secure financial support from the International Monetary Fund. The fund approved a $2.35 billion loan for the country in December, but the turmoil hasn't abated.
"What now seems apparent is that Latvia, and indeed the Baltic states more generally, face their biggest challenge since independence," said Timothy Ash, head of CEEMEA research at Royal Bank of Scotland.
"With the currency pegged, and hence unable to ease the adjustment through a currency correction, the real economy is taking the full strain of the adjustment," Ash said.
The Latvian economy contracted by 10.5% in the fourth quarter of 2008, and official forecasts now suggest that the economy could shrink by as much as 12% this year.
"The resignation of Godmanis is a clear escalation of the political crisis that has hit Latvia, and there is little doubt that this could lead to serious speculation about the government's austerity measures as part of the IMF-led rescue package that the country received in December," said Lars Christensen, chief analyst at Denmark's Danske Bank.
The election campaign could lead to a rise in populist sentiment and it's very likely that austerity measures will come under serious criticism, Christensen said in a note to clients.
"The renewed political crisis in Latvia is likely to deal yet another blow to the already hard-hit Baltic markets," he said. "Furthermore, we have already seen the news out of Riga putting downward pressure on the Swedish krona."
The krona fell 1.4% against the euro in recent trading. Swedish banks dominate Latvia's banking sector; among them are SEB (SE:SEBA: news , chart , profile ) , Swedbank (SE:SWEDA: news , chart , profile ) and Nordea (SE:NDASEK: news , chart , profile ).
Investors have been increasingly worried in recent days about Western European banks supporting subsidiaries in Eastern Europe. Austria and Sweden are seen as among the most vulnerable because of their high exposure to the region.
His name is Uros Vilovski (see the picture), one of the teammates of Marian Cozma, Zarko Sesum and Ivan Pesic. According to witnesses, when he saw the gypsies assaulting the people that are trying to help Maria Cozma, he blocked their way. Then, the gypsies turned on him, trying to catch him. This smart but dangerous (heroic) move turned the gypsies' attention from his teammates interrupting the murderous attack.
When the gypsies left, he went back to the disco then he heard Ivan Pesic saying “I was stabbed, help me”. He then pressed the wound of Pesic with his hands to slow the bleeding then lifted him up and took him to the hospital on his back.
According to doctors, this quick action of Uros Vilovski, probably saved the life of Ivan Pesic.
When asked about his heroic act, Uros Vilovski was brief. “I took him to the hospital, that's all and I don't want to talk anymore about this”.
Since, Ivan Pesic has left the hospital and recovering in Croatia. But no one can say for sure whether he can continue his career or not. Before, he has to recover completely that might take many months.
The police arrested the fourth gypsy suspect linked to the murder of Marian Cozma. He is Gábor P., 32 year old man with a criminal record; he was captured on Monday evening, in Budapest. Pictures of Gábor P..
The HavariaPress reported that today, police has arrested the fifth murder suspect wanted for the murder of Marian Cozma. He is the 47 year old Csaba B. who was captured in the town of Zalaegerszeg. According to well-informed sources, family members and relatives of the criminal Csaba B. are on their way to Veszprém to free him from police custody. Police spokesman confirmed the news by saying that there was enough resources at hand to defend the police station if needs be.

February 17, 2009 "ICH" -- -Eastern Europe is about to blow. If it does, it could take much of the EU with it. It's an emergency situation but there are no easy solutions. The IMF doesn't have the resources for a bailout of this size and the recession is spreading faster than relief efforts can be organized. Finance ministers and central bankers are running in circles trying to put out one fire after another. Its only a matter of time before they are overtaken by events. If one country is allowed to default, the dominoes could begin to tumble through the whole region. This could trigger dramatic changes in the political landscape. The rise of fascism is no longer out of the question.
The UK Telegraph's economics editor Edmund Conway sums it up like this:
"A 'second wave' of countries will fall victim to the economic crisis and face being bailed out by the International Monetary Fund, its chief warned at the G7 summit in Rome....But with some countries' economies effectively dwarfed by the size of their banking sector and its financial liabilities, there are fears they could fall victim to balance of payments and currency crises, much as Iceland did before receiving emergency assistance from the IMF last year." (UK Telegraph)
Foreign capital is fleeing at an alarming rate; nearly two-thirds gone in matter of months. Deflation is pushing down asset prices, increasing unemployment, and compounding the debt-burden of financial institutions. It's the same everywhere. The economies are being hollowed out and stripped of capital. Ukraine is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary have all slipped into a low-grade depression. The countries that followed Washington's economic regimen have suffered the most. They bet that debt-fueled growth and exports would lead to prosperity. That dream has been shattered. They haven't developed their consumer markets, so demand is weak. Capital is scarce and businesses are being forced to deleverage to avoid default. All of Eastern Europe has gotten a margin call. They need extra funds to cover the falling value of their equity. They need a lifeline from the IMF or their economies will continue to crumble.
The UK Telegraph's economics correspondent Ambrose Evans-Pritchard has written a series of articles about Eastern Europe. In "Failure to save East Europe will lead to Worldwide meltdown" he says:
"Austria's finance minister Josef Pröll made frantic efforts last week to put together a €150bn rescue for the ex-Soviet bloc. Well he might. His banks have lent €230bn to the region, equal to 70pc of Austria's GDP.
"A failure rate of 10pc would lead to the collapse of the Austrian financial sector," reported Der Standard in Vienna. Unfortunately, that is about to happen.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) says bad debts will top 10pc and may reach 20pc....
Stephen Jen, currency chief at Morgan Stanley, said Eastern Europe has borrowed $1.7 trillion abroad, much on short-term maturities. It must repay – or roll over – $400bn this year, equal to a third of the region's GDP. Good luck. The credit window has slammed shut.
Almost all East bloc debts are owed to West Europe, especially Austrian, Swedish, Greek, Italian, and Belgian banks. En plus, Europeans account for an astonishing 74pc of the entire $4.9 trillion portfolio of loans to emerging markets. They are five times more exposed to this latest bust than American or Japanese banks, and they are 50pc more leveraged (IMF data). (Ambrose Evans-Pritchard UK Telegraph)
An economic crisis is quickly turning into a political crisis. Riots have broken out in capitals across Eastern Europe. Mr. Geithner had better be paying attention. The prospects for political upheaval are growing. Public anxiety can spill out onto the streets at a moments notice. Governments must act quickly and with resolve. These countries need hard currency and guarantees of support. If they don't get help, the simmering public fury will turn into something much more lethal.
UK Telegraph's economics correspondent Ambrose Evans-Pritchard:
"Global banks have so far written down half the $2,200bn losses estimated by the IMF. On top of this, EU banks have $1,600bn of exposure to Eastern Europe -- increasingly viewed as Europe’s subprime debacle, and EU corporate debts are 95pc of GDP compared to 50pc in the US, a mounting concern as default rates surge.
“It is essential that government support through asset relief should not be on a scale that raises concern about over-indebtedness or financing problems. Such considerations are particularly important in the current context of widening budget deficits, rising public debt levels and challenges in sovereign bond issuance." (UK Telegraph)
It's the same wherever banks merged their commercial and investment branches. Debt has skyrocketed to unsustainable levels destabilizing the entire economy. The banks have been operating like hedge funds, concealing their activities on off-balance sheets operations and maximizing their leverage through opaque debt-instruments. Now the global economy is caught in the downdraft of a collapsing speculative bubble. East Europe has been hit hard, but it's just the first of many bowling pins that will fall. All of Europe has been infected by the same virus which originated on Wall Street. Monday's New York Times summarizes developments in the EU:
"Europe sank even deeper into recession than the United States in the closing months of last year, according to figures published Friday...The economy of the 16 countries sharing the euro currency declined by 1.5 percent in the fourth quarter, (an annualized drop of roughly 6 percent) according to the European Union's statistics office. That is even worse than the 1 percent decline in the United States economy during that period, compared with the previous quarter.
“Today’s data wipes out any illusion that the euro zone is getting off lightly in this global downturn,” said Jörg Radeke, an economist at the Center for Economics and Business Research in London. ("Europe Slump Deeper than Expected" New york Times)
The "liquidationists" would like to see governments cut off the flow of funds to ailing financial institutions and let them fail by themselves. It's Darwinian madness, like waiting out a heart attack on the kitchen floor instead of rushing to the hospital for emergency care. The global economy is decelerating at the fastest pace on record. 40 percent of global wealth has been wiped out. The banking system is insolvent, unemployment is soaring, tax revenues are falling, the markets are in shock, housing is crashing, deficits are soaring, and consumer confidence is at its lowest point in history. This is no time to cling to half-baked ideology. The global economy is undergoing a massive system-wide contraction which could spin out of control and plunge us into another world war. Political leaders need to grasp the urgency of the moment and keep the vehicle from careening into the ditch.
Details surrounding the murder of Marian Cozma, the handball player of the MKB Veszprém handball club, getting murkier by each passing day. Today, the discredited chief of the Hungarian police force, József Bencze, apologized to the Veszprem county court for blaming the delay of the arrest warrant on the judges of the court. Police issued an arrest warrant for the murder of Marian Cozma more than 12 hours after the crime was committed attributing the delay to the unavailability of judges authorizing the warrant. The next day, the Veszprém county court judge found the statement amusing by saying that judges were available but the first police contact came in at 7.20 pm.
But there are more to this story. On February 8, police spokesman reported that Austrian police arrested the two accused at 8.50 pm. following up on the international arrest warrant issued by the Hungarian police. However, it turned out that the arrest warrant was issued only after the Austrian police arrested the criminals.
The number of suspects are also keep changing as the days go by. First, two suspects were charged, Iván Sztojka and Sandor Raffael. But before the arrest warrant was issued the third suspect, Győző N., traveling with Sandor Raffael had been also arrested in Austria. Hm. Then police clearly stated that the other, approximately 25 gang members couldn't be charged because they did nothing wrong only watched the three accused murdering Marian Cozma. (What a statement)
One week later, on February 16, police introduced a new twist into the story by arresting the fourth suspects, Gábor P., and hinting that more arrests will follow.
Wait and see what the next installment of the story will bring us; I am sure, it will hold plenty of surprises.
Zarko Sesum, the player of the MKB Veszprém handball club improved so much that he could leave the hospital on Monday, said Jenő Rácz the leading surgeon of the Veszprém health facility. Zarko Sesum seriously injured in the last week when a gang of gypsies attacked him and his teammates in a discotheque, that left Marian Cozma dead and Ivan Pesic seriously injured.
Zarko Sesum suffered serious head and eye injuries. Jenő Rácz said that Ivan Pesic, the goalkeeper of the team still needed more treatments. He was stabbed and as a result, one of his kidneys had to be removed, but his condition is also improving and now is well enough to be moved into a Croatian hospital.
Press Release No. 09/36
February 16, 2009
An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission issued the following statement in Budapest today at the end of the first review under Hungary's Stand-By Arrangement with the IMF:
"An IMF mission, led by Mr. James Morsink, held discussions with the Hungarian authorities during February 4-16, 2009 and reached a staff-level agreement with the authorities on a package of policies that aims at completing the first review under the Stand-By Arrangement. The mission worked in close cooperation with a parallel mission from the European Commission carried out in the context of the European Union balance of payments assistance.
"In the weeks ahead, IMF staff and the authorities will work together to finalize a Letter of Intent, with a view to allowing the IMF Executive Board to consider the completion of the first review under the arrangement in late March. The completion of this review will enable Hungary to draw an amount equivalent to SDR 2.1 billion (about €2.5 billion).
"The Hungarian authorities have implemented the policies described in their previous Letter of Intent of November 2008. The quantitative performance criteria and indicative target for December 2008 were all met. Inflation was broadly as envisaged under the program. The structural performance criterion and benchmarks were also all met.
"Looking forward, the key objectives of the program remain to improve fiscal sustainability and preserve the stability of the financial sector. The worsening global environment implies a downward revision of Hungary's macroeconomic outlook and therefore the need for additional policy measures. Important measures in the fiscal area will reduce the government's immediate financing needs relative to 2008 and contribute to restoring debt sustainability over the medium term. In the financial sector, the core measures aim to maintain ample liquidity and strong levels of capital in the banking system.
"The continued success of the policy package will be a shared responsibility between all stakeholders in the country and the international community. The IMF, in close coordination with the European Union and the World Bank, will continue assisting the Hungarian authorities on how to adapt to the current global financial turmoil and to catalyze financing as needed."
The chief of the Hungarian police force ordered an investigation to find out what caused the delay of the arrest warrant for murder against the gypsy criminals attacking the Veszprem handball team on Sunday morning. Previous police reports implied that the more than 12 hours delay was due to the fact that authorities couldn't find a judge to authorize the warrant. Today, the Veszprem court judge clearly stated that he was available all day but the first request for the warrant came in twenty minutes after seven in the evening.

HAVANA, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Cuba launched its own variant of the Linux computer operating system this week in the latest front of the communist island's battle against what it views as U.S. hegemony.
The Cuban variant, called Nova, was introduced at a Havana computer conference on "technological sovereignty" and is central to the Cuban government's desire to replace the Microsoft software running most of the island's computers.
The government views the use of Microsoft systems, developed by U.S.-based Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O), as a potential threat because it says U.S. security agencies have access to Microsoft codes.
Also, the long-standing U.S. trade embargo against the island makes it difficult for Cubans to get Microsoft software legally and to update it.
"Getting greater control over the informatic process is an important issue," said Communications Minister Ramiro Valdes, who heads a commission pushing Cuba's migration to free software.
Cuba, which is 90 miles (144 km) from Florida, has been resisting U.S. domination in one form or another since Fidel Castro took over Cuba in a 1959 revolution.
Younger brother Raul Castro replaced the ailing 82-year-old leader last year, but the U.S.-Cuba conflict goes on, now in the world of software.
According to Hector Rodriguez, dean of the School of Free Software at Cuba's University of Information Sciences, about 20 percent of computers in Cuba, where computer sales to the public began only last year, are currently using Linux.
Nova is Cuba's own configuration of Linux and bundles various applications of the operating system.
Rodriguez said several government ministries and the Cuban university system have made the switch to Linux but there has been resistance from government companies concerned about its compatibility with their specialized applications.
"I would like to think that in five years our country will have more than 50 percent migrated (to Linux)," he said.
Unlike Microsoft, Linux is free and has open access that allows users to modify its code to fit their needs.
"Private software can have black holes and malicious codes that one doesn't know about," Rodriguez said. "That doesn't happen with free software."
Apart from security concerns, free software better suits Cuba's world view, he said.
"The free software movement is closer to the ideology of the Cuban people, above all for the independence and sovereignty." (Editing by Jeff Franks and Bill Trott)
Iván Sztojka, the other gypsy accused of participating in the murder of Marian Cozma gave himself up to police to day, a few minutes before midnight, reported the MTI, the Hungarian News Agency. With his lawyer on his side, he reported to one of Veszprém's police stations (it was not specified which one) where he was taken into custody.
A few days ago, he wrote a letter to his parents, in which he indicated that he had been ready to give himself up. Now, three of the ringleaders are in custody but questions remain about the fate of the other gang members that also took part in the brawl leading to the murder of Marian Cozma and the stabbing of his teammates.
In 2009 we’re going to see the worst economic collapse ever, the ‘Greatest Depression’, says Gerald Celente, U.S. trend forecaster. He believes it’s going to be very violent in the U.S., including there being a tax revolt.
RT: The fragile U.S. economy has been met with bank bailouts and stimulus plans. So what’s to come in 2009? Joining me now to answer that question is Gerald Celente, founder and director of the Trends Research Institute. Thank you for joining me.
Gerald Celente: My pleasure.
RT: How would you define the economic trend that you have forecasted for 2009?
G.C.: We’re going to see the economic collapse the likes of which the world has never seen before. It’s not only in the United States; it’s going global. At the end of 2008 we saw Christmas retail sales: women’s apparel down 23%; home furnishings and electronics off 27%; luxury items down 35%. These are Depression Era collapses. We saw major bankruptcies, such as retailers Circuit City and Linens and Things. One bankruptcy after another. Then we saw store closings. Starbucks, Home D&D Power and down the line.
The question becomes who is going to take all of the vacant retail space? Who is going to rent it? The answer is - nobody. Now we look at the financial collapse in 2008, we saw the Merrill Lynch mob go under the bed and the Lehman boys went bankrupt. You saw bond companies, brokerage firms, and banks go belly up. Who is going to rent all the vacant commercial business space that they used to occupy? The answer is - nobody. The commercial real estate collapse that’s going to happen in 2009 is going to dwarf the residential real estate collapse.
RT: You use the Great Depression as an analogy, as a comparison. During the Great Depression unemployment was 25%. Now it has increased, it’s I think over 7.2. Is that number going to get much, much bigger?
G.C.: We have to look at the real number. There are two sets of books that the government keeps. When they measure up unemployment they don’t add in the people who are no longer looking for jobs because they have become discouraged since they cannot find employment after looking so long. And they don’t include part-time workers. When you put that number into it, the number is 13.7%. And that’s a government number. And this is just beginning. And again, current events form future trends.
What did we see? We saw in one day some 61,000 jobs evaporate off the map. You’re going to see Great Depression numbers. Because, as I mentioned, with this commercial real estate collapse, all of these retail stores closing, like Starbucks and Macy’s, you go down the line. You look not only at people who work for these places that no longer have jobs, but how about all the supportive industries - the advertising, the manufacturers, the products. They’re going to be laying off people as well. We’re going to see Great Depression numbers. In that effect, this is going to be worse than the Great Depression.
RT: What are we going to see happening to the society, to people’s day-to-day lives in terms of how they treat one another, how they behave, crime?
G.C.: When I say it’s going to be worse than the Great Depression, we call it the Greatest Depression. By the way, to be using 1930s models to get the U.S. out of this is really stupid. Back then when we first crashed most people didn’t have homes. There was no such thing as home equity loan. And back then, people didn’t have credit cards. The consumer wasn’t 14 trillion dollars in debt. We had a manufacturing base that built the world out of the Great Depression following World War Two. We no longer have that.
Now people are at the edge. They’re stressed out. Look, the Americans are the most depressed nation on the world already. They take more antidepressant drugs than anybody, plus the other kinds of drugs that they are taking. You’re going to see crime levels in America that are going to rival the third world. Welcome Mexico City. You’re going to start seeing people being kidnapped in this country like they do in other underdeveloped nations. So it’s going to be very violent in America.
RT: You’re not exaggerating?
G.C.: I’m not exaggerating, the facts are there. I have a saying: when people lose everything and they have nothing to lose, they lose it. You’re going to see people saying, off with their heads. There’s going to be another revolution in this country.
RT: When will this revolution that you have forecasted in your Trends journal happen and what will ignite it?
G.C.: It’s going to be a tax revolt. We’re going to start seeing a tax revolt in the United States. People are one job away from losing everything. We’re seeing more and more closures, people are being laid off. People are stretched to the limits. And what do they do in New York State? Some130 new taxes are being proposed, they’re raising sales taxes. There’s going to be a tax revolt in this country from property taxes first and school taxes second. That’s what we’re going to see start to happen.
RT: Do you feel people are not hopeful that Obama will make a difference?
G.C.: People are hopeful, they are desperate and they are fearful. And they’ll hang on to anything. Let’s look at the facts. A man of change, who did he bring into Washington? You know they say by their deeds you shall know them. Let’s look at his Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner, former Robert Rubin from the Clinton administration, the former president of the New York Federal Reserve Bank. Change? How about Larry Summers, the former Clinton Secretary of Treasury? I mean, I’ve been around a long time. I never remember a newly elected president bringing in basically the national security team from the last administration who happen to be from another party.
RT: Do you not think Obama’s different in any way?
G.C.: By their deeds you shall know them! If I bring in a baseball hitter that strikes out every time and I want him to play in the World Series is he going to hit the ball over the fence? They brought in Larry Summers, Timothy Geithner. Look at the crew. Look who they are. They’re strike out artists, every one of them. The only thing that they know how to do is not to get their finger nails dirty.
RT: There was a sentence in your report, the Trends Journal, that really caught my attention. You wrote: ‘On 9/11, those who listened to the authorities and returned to their offices went down with the towers.’ So are you saying that Americans should not be listening to the officials who are saying the Stimulus Plans are going to make everything better? Is that the analogy?
G.C.: Read my lips. No new taxes. I didn’t have sex with that woman, Monica Lewinski.
I smoked but I didn’t inhale. Saddam Hussein has weapons of mass destruction and ties to Al-Qaeda. Why would anybody believe these people?
RT: So what are Americans supposed to do if they’re not supposed to trust their leaders?
G.C.: Personally, I buy gold. And I’ve been talking about gold since the Trends Journal 2001. We peg the bottom and we said it would start going up at 275. Number two, you don’t spend a dime you don’t need to spend.
RT: What would be the good jobs to benefit from in this year?
G.C.: Anything having to do with health. Anything. It’s going to be a growth industry. And fortunately a lot of them are going to pay a lot of money in that field because a lot of that is going to be care for the elderly. And the other thing really is anything having to do with conservation engineers, anything that’s going to prove technologically sound and smart to save money and to make money.
RT: What about geopolitics, what trends are we going to see in terms of the relationships between the United States and the rest of the world?
G.C.: Well the rest of the world is very hopeful, using the word ‘hope’, with the Obama administration. And again, we’re going to have to see what transpires, but so far, and again, by their deeds you shall know them.
Obama, when he first started to run, he was going to be out of Iraq. As soon as he became president he was going to start bringing soldiers home. Now they won’t be out for 16 months and now their reports say they’re going to bring upwards of 40,000 more troops to Afghanistan. He was also talking about preventive strikes in Pakistan. So it really doesn’t look like it’s going to be much of a smoothing of geopolitical relations.
The one factor we’re looking at, at a time that could only be the worst time for it to happen, is what’s going on in the Middle East, in the Israel-Gaza war. Israel, as they said, they were trying to do as the reports have come out, if they attack Iran at any level, it will begin World War Three. Because if this war spreads beyond Gaza, it’s going to inflame the Middle East. It can cause an oil crisis as we saw in 1973, that’s what ended the Arab-Israeli war when they embargoed oil going into the U.S. That’s our major concern. We’re also seeing, and we’re going to wonder, if Obama continues with putting the so-called missile defense shield in Poland and in Czech Republic in Eastern Europe and if they keep pushing more and more into Georgia. If that keeps happening we’re going to see a reignition of the Cold War.
RT: You have been trend casting since 1980, more than two decades. How do you compile your information and why do you believe you’ve been so spot-on most of the time?
G.C.: Current events form future trends. You can see what’s going on. A great scholar said, “In today already walks tomorrow.” So we say current events form future trends. But when people look at the trends, they colour them or shade them with their own ideology, their own beliefs. It’s what they want, what they hope for, what they wish for.
I’m a political atheist. I look at things for the way they are, not the way I want them to be. I don’t colour them or try to change them because of an ideology. The other major factor that we do differently at Trends Research Institute than anywhere else is we look at over 300 different categories on a global basis. So we’re looking at economics, we’re looking at politics, we’re looking at changes in the family, we’re looking at geopolitics. We’re making connections between different fields continually.
RT: How can America get out of the situation?
G.C.: All you have to do is to look back to the 1990s when America entered into a recession. We had 7.2 unemployment rate in 1993. What got the U.S. out of the 1990s recession was something called the ‘internet revolution’ that had a productive capacity. Products were invented, designed, manufactured, marketed and serviced. So you’re asking about new jobs, ask about alternative energies. Anything that’s going to advance the U.S. into the 21st century in an intelligent way. That’s where the job opportunities are going to be.
RT: Gerald Celente, founder of the Trends Research Institute, thank you very much for taking time to speak with us.
G.C.: My pleasure.
On the left, the picture of the disco where Marian Cozma was murdered.
There are conflicting reports what actually happened during the night when Marian Cozma was killed. Stop.hu investigated and found more details surrounding the crime. This is what they have learned.
Police already know that Marian Cozma was stubbed by Sándor Raffael. (See the murderer below)
The criminal has been arrested without incident by Austrian police when trying to flee the country with his girlfriend and another man. They are all in custody in Austria and expected to be returned to Hungary within weeks.
[UPDATE:Sándor Raffael said to Austrian investigators that he was heading for Italy where he has been running a prostitution ring.]
Iván Sztojka is still at large (See his picture below).
Both gypsies are repeat offenders.
Iván Sztojka has been released from jail recently for good behavior, serving only part of his sentence. He is a member of a criminal organization controlling the South shore of Lake Balaton leaving off from protection money extorted from small businesses.
According to sources, the gypsies went to the disco to demonstrate a show of force.
The hospital, where Ivan Pesic and Zarko Sesum are recovering released a statement. According to doctors, the condition of Zarko Sesum is improving, he can start training soon.
The condition of Ivan Pesic is serious; one of his kidneys had to be removed.
Today, the police offered one million forint reward for information leading to the arrest of Ivan Sztojka, the other gypsy, who went into hiding after killing Marian Cozma.
He is 165-170 cm tall, muscular and his head is shaved.
According to hospital officials, the condition of Zarko Sesum improved so much that he was transferred from intensive care to a regular unit, on Wednesday.
Ivan Pesic, still in intensive care because of viral complications. Otherwise, both players are in satisfactory condition. They remember everything what happened to them.
Today, the convoy carrying Marian Cozma back to his homeland, crossed into Romania. During the procession the convoy stopped in many Romanian cities to let fans pay tribute to the great player.
He will be laid to rest in the Pipera cemetery in Bucharest on Friday.
In the mean time, the MKB-Veszprém handball club decided that the No. 8 shirt worn by Marian Cozma during his time with the club will be withdrawn forever, so that no one at the club will ever again wear that number.
Russia is ready to introduce sanctions against the countries of Eastern Europe which delivered arms to Georgia during the recent war in the Caucasus. The countries still have Soviet arms in their arsenals which require regular modernization and spare parts shipments. Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev entrusted the government with preparing a list of suggestions to cease the military cooperation with those countries that practice arms shipments with Georgia.
First and foremost, it goes about the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Poland. Just like the United States, Ukraine and Israel, they were providing weapons to Georgia before, during and after the war in August 2008. Now Russia is ready to scrap its military cooperation with them.

According to sources police captured two gypsies suspected of murdering Marian Cozma, the player of the MKB-Veszprém handball club and the stubbing two of his teammates, Croatian national Ivan Pesic and Serbian national Zarko Sesum.
Gábor Vona, the president of Jobbik, in a statement condemned the murder of Marian Cozma, the player of the MKB-Veszprém handball club.
"We expect the police to arrest the criminals as quickly as possible and inform the public about the situation surrounding the crime".
The jumping crime rate in Hungary confirms that the government is unable to protect Hungarians from violent criminals implying a governing coalition that is virtually bankrupt. The high crime rate causes extreme anxiety and fear among the wider population. All elected parties are responsible for the current situation.
Jobbik considers public safety as the number one issue and will work toward implementing swift changes in this area if elected into the Parliament. Jobbik wants to beef up the police and law enforcement and to impose harsher sentences on criminals.
Mr. Vona also suggested the elimination of the "wellness" prisons and the reinstatement of the capital punishment.
Gypsy criminals attacked and killed Marian Cozma, the player of the MKB-Veszprém and the Romanian national handball team. The 26 year old handball player was stabbed in a disco fight instigated by a gypsy horde. His teammates, Croatian national Ivan Pesic and Serbian national Zarko Sesum were seriously injured in the brutal attack.
Ivan Pesic was stabbed in his kidneys and was operated on in the local hospital; he is expected to survive. Zarko Sesum suffered facial injuries and he is in stable condition.
The players celebrated the birth of their teammate's child, in the Patriota discotheque where a gang of gypsies, about 30, attacked the players with bottles, chairs and knives. The fight continued outside the discotheque where Marian Cozma was fatally stabbed.
This incident is one more proof of gypsy brutality that has been happening across the country on a regular basis. Gypsy criminals are terrorizing large parts of the country, under the watchful eye of the Socialist-Liberal government that does nothing to prevent these crimes from happening.
The Bulgarian Parliament modified the country's child protection bylaw. The new legislature imposes a curfew on juveniles under 18 years of age. The law bans youngsters under the age of 14 and adolescents between 14-18 years of age from public places, after 10 pm. Parents are responsible for the enforcement of the law. The penalty for violation can go up as much as 145 thousand forints.
Several US States are either bankrupt (such as California) or are wavering (New York). Many states will need bailouts. California has suspended tax refunds and welfare payments in order to save money. Rising homelessness and the potential for social unrest are certain by-products of the deteriorating situation. Speaking of social unrest, there have been reported economic protests and riots in Iceland, Latvia and Bulgaria. Could they come here as well? Economic and social unrest, protests and riots were a staple of the Great Depression. There is no particular reason for it not to happen here as well as unemployment, homelessness and bankruptcies rise.

Microwave cooking ovens were originally researched and developed by German scientists to support mobile operations during the invasion of the Soviet Union. Had they perfected electronic equipment to prepare meals on a mass scale, the Nazis could have eliminated the logistical problems connected with cooking fuels while producing edible products in far less time than they could using traditional campfires. After the war, the Allies discovered the medical research and documentation concerning those apparatuses. The papers and experimental microwave equipment were transferred to the U.S. War Department and classified for reference and scientific investigation. The Soviet Union also retrieved some of the devices and began an experiment on them separately. The Russians – who have done the most diligent research into the biological effects of microwave ovens – have OUTLAWED THEIR USE and issued an international warning about the biological and environmental damage that can result form the use of this and similar-frequency electronic apparatus.
Medical Research Summary
The most significant German research concerned with the biological effects of microwaves was done at the Humboldt Universitat zu Berlin in 1942-43, during the Barbarossa military campaign. Beginning in 1957 and continuing up to the present, Russian studies in the field have been conducted at the Institute of Radio Technology. In most research, the foods were exposed to microwave propagation at an energy potential of 100 kilowatts per cubic centimeter per second to the point considered acceptable for sanitary normal ingestion. The observations made by the German and Russian microwave researchers will be presented here in three categories: cancer-causing effects, destruction of nutritive value and biological effects of direct exposure of humans to microwave emissions.
Effects on Microwaved Foods
The following effects have been observed when foods are subjected to microwave emissions.
Meats: Heating prepared meats sufficiently to insure sanitary ingestion creates d-nitrosodiethanolamine, a well-known cancer-causing agent.
Proteins: Active-protein, biomolecular compounds are destabilized.
Increase in Radioactivity: A “binding effect” between the microwaved food and any atmospheric radioactivity is created, causing a marked increase in the amount of alpha and beta particle saturation in the food.
Milk and Cereals: Cancer-causing agents are created in the protein-hydrolysate compounds in milk and cereal grains.
Frozen Foods: Microwaves used to thaw frozen foods alter the catabolism (breakdown) of the glucoside and galactoside elements (see Note 1).
Vegetables: Even extremely brief exposure of raw, cooked or frozen vegetables to microwaves alter alkaloid catabolism (see Note 2).
Resulting Effects on the Human Body
Digestive System: The unstable catabolism of microwaved foods alters their elemental food substances, causing disorders in the digestive system.
Lymphatic Systems: Due to chemical alterations within food substances, malfunctions occur in the lymphatic system, causing a degeneration of the body’s ability to protect itself against certain forms of neoplastics (cancerous growths).
Blood: A higher-than-normal percentage of cancerous cells in blood serum (cytomas) can be seen in subjects ingesting microwaved foods.
Brain: Their residual magnetism effect can render the psychoneural-receptor components of the brain more subject to influence of artificially induced, microwave-radio-frequency fields from transmission stations and TV relay networks.
Free Radicals: Certain trace minerals molecular formations in plant substances (in particular, raw-root vegetables) form cancer-causing free radicals.
Increased Incidence of Stomach and Intestinal Cancers: A statistically higher percentage of cancerous growths result in these organisms, plus a generalized breakdown of the peripheral cellular tissues and a gradual degeneration of digestive and excretory functions.
Microwaves Reduce Food Values
Microwave exposure caused significant decreases in the nutritive value of all foods studied. The following are the most important findings to date.
Vitamins And Minerals Made Useless: In every food tested, the bioavailability (see Note 3) of the following vital nutrients decreased: Vitamin B Complex, vitamins C and E, essential minerals and lipotropics.
Vital Energy Fields Devastated: The vital energy field content of all foods tested dropped 60 to 90 percent.
Digestibility of Fruits and Vegetables Reduced: Microwaving lowers the metabolic behavior and integration process capability of alkaloids, glucosides, alactosides, and nitrilosides (see Note 4).
Meat Proteins Worthless: It destroys the nutritive value of nucleoproteins (see Note 5) in meats.
All Food Damaged: It greatly accelerates the structural disintegration of all foods tested.
Biological Effects of Microwaves
Exposure to microwave emissions also has a negative effects upon the general biological welfare of humans. This was not discovered until the Russians experimented with highly sophisticated equipment and discovered that humans can be adversely affected without even ingesting the foods that have been subjected to microwave radiation.
Merely Entering the Energy Fields of the Food causes such harmful side-effects that the Soviets outlawed all much microwave apparatus in 1976. Here are the effects observed in humans having ‘direct’ exposure to microwaves, that is, without their having consumed the Irradiated [microwaved] food substances.
Life-energy Field Breakdown: Persons near microwave ovens in operation experience a breakdown in their life-energy fields which increases relative to the length of exposure.
Cellular Energy Decreases: The cellular-voltage parallels of individuals using the apparatus degenerate – especially in their blood and lymphatic serums.
Destabilized Metabolism: The external energy activated potentials of food utilization are both destablilized and degenerated.
Cell Damage: Internal cellular-membrane potentials during catabolic processes into the blood serum from the digestive process degenerate and destabilize.
Brain Circuitry Destruction: Electrical impulses in the junction potentials of the cerebrum degenerate and break down.
Nervous System: Nerve/electrical circuits degenerate and break down while energy field symmetry is lost in the neuro-lexuses (nerve centers) in both the front and rear of the central and autonomic nervous systems.
Loss of Bioelectric Strength: The bio-electric strengths within the ascending reticular (see Note 6) activating system (the system which controls the function of waking consciousness) go out of valance and lose their proper circuiting.
Loss of Vital Energies: Humans, animals, and plants located within a 500 meter radius of the equipment in operation suffer a long term, cumulative loss of vital energies.
Nervous and Lymphatic System Damage: Long-lasting residual and magnetic ‘deposits’ become located throughout the nervous and lymphatic systems.
Hormone Imbalances: The production of hormones and maintenance of hormonal balance in both males and females becomes destabilized and interrupted.
Brainwave Disruption: Levels of disturbance in alpha-, delta-, and theta-wave signal patterns are markedly higher than normal.
Psychological Disorders: Because of the disarranged brain waves, negative psychological effects will also result. These include loss of memory and the ability to concentrate, suppressed emotional threshold, deceleration of intellective processes and interruptive sleep episodes in a statistically higher percentage of individuals subjected to continual rang-emission field effects of microwave apparatus, from either cooking apparatus or transmission stations.
Potential Use In Mind Control
Due to the creation of random, residual magnetic deposits and binding within the biological systems of the body (nervous and lymphatic systems damage) which can ultimately affect the neurological systems (primarily the brain and nerve centers), longer-term depolarization of tissue neuroelectronic circuits can result. Because these effects can cause virtually irremissible damage to the neuroelectrical integrity of the various components of the nervous system (see Note 7), ingestion of microwaved foods is clearly contraindicated in all respects. Their residual magnetism effect can render the psychoneural-receptor components of the brain more subject to influence by artificially induced, microwave-radio-frequency fields from transmission stations and TV relay networks.
Soviet neuropsychologists at Uralyera and Novosibirsk (see Note 8) have theorized the possibility of psychotelemetric influence (i.e., affecting human behavior by transmitting radio signals at controlled frequencies), causing subjects to comply – involuntarily and subliminally – with commands received through microwave transmissions acting upon their psychological energy fields. For this reason, and due to the 28 other contradictions listed above, the use of microwave apparatus in any form is definitely ill-advised. Present scientific opinion in many countries clearly opposes them, as exemplified by the mentioned Soviet Ban.
Great expectations are surrounding the introduction of Rubik's 360, on February 5, in Germany. The Rubik's 360 is the newest invention of Ernő Rubik the inventor of the phenomenally successful Rubik's Cube three decades ago. The new toy will be available world-wide in August. The expectations are high; everyone expects that the new toy will become an instant success just like the cube was three decades ago. The Rubik's 360 has numerous combinations but only one solution. It consists of three closed spheres and six colorful balls enclosed in the structure. The challenge is to rescue the balls from the enclosure.
The Rubik's Cube came out in 1980 and became an instant success. 350 million pieces have been sold and has become the number one toy around the world. The toy has also acquired the status of a work of art and as such on permanent display in the Museum of Modern Arts in New York city.
The 64 years old Ernő Rubik awarded with the Kossuth Prize in 2007. He has released a brief statement regarding his newest invention: " I think the Rubik's 360 is the most ingenious and most exciting toy I have invented since the Rubik's Cube."
After inventing the Rubik's Cube he has developed numerous other toys but none have become as successful as the Cube.
