Hungarian Immigration and Naturalization Service has received nearly half a million new citizenship applications so far

Recent data released by Hungarian Immigration and Naturalization Office shows that since January 2011, more than 422 thousand citizenship applications have been received. So far more than 340 thousand new Hungarian citizens took the citizenship oath.

The nationality breakdown of the available data shows that 283,866 Romanians, 1,284 Russians, 76,652 Serbs, 50,658 Ukrainians and 1515 Slovakian applied for Hungarian citizenship.

From North-America, 787 Canadian and 1013 American nationals applied for Hungarian citizenship.

The parliament passed the simplified Hungarian citizenship act on May 26, 2010. The simplified citizenship law states that descendants of individuals that had been Hungarian citizens before 1920 or between 1938 and 1945, still speak Hungarian, and don't pose public or national security risk eligible for Hungarian citizenship regardless what part of the world they live.
