Good news from the western part of the country -- the Danube peaked at Győr

Saturday, June 8, 2013

Not long ago, the Danube peaked at Győr and for the most part the flood defenses did hold.

Győr Mayor Zsolt Borkai said at Nagybajcs the water level of the Danube slowly but steadily dropping.

The river reached the highest water level in Győr, which corresponds to the predicted height. The city's defense line is solid, and there is no need to worry that the water washes away the dikes anywhere said the mayor.

In some places the dikes are still leaking, but the water is under control by specialists. Special thanks go out to the residents of the city of Győr for helping filling sandbags under the guidance of experts to prevent further leaks said the mayor.

The mayor asks residents to continue to watch the news, because volunteers are still needed in several places, as the dropping of the water is slow. It is important not to listen to rumors that might cause panic. Despite false reports, the dikes are still standing at Győrújfalu and there is as yet no emergency that would justify the closure of the levees surrounding the city of Győr.
