PM Viktor Orbán, World Champion Swimmer Katinka Hosszú and the head of the Hungarian Olympic Committee Zsolt Borkai lobbying for the Hungarian bid

FINA's governing body announced in Barcelona on Thursday that Hungary will host the 2021 World Championships. After hosting several European Championships, this will be the first time that Hungary hosts a FINA World Championships.

At the general staff meeting in Barcelona on Tuesday FINA also decided that Budapest will host the Junior Swimming World Championships in 2017.

Among others, PM Viktor Orbán, the head of the Hungarian Olympic Committee Zsolt Borkai, the head of the Hungarian Swimming Association Tamás Gyárfás and World Champion Swimmer Katinka Hosszú were also in Barcelona to convince FINA officials that Budapest was the best choice for the event. Earlier, the United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan withdrew their bid to host the event.
