Letter from World Champion Archer József Mónus: The story of the 467-meter world record

Thursday, July 18, 2013

Dear Hungarian citizens!

Let me tell you what it was like to be Hungarian on June 22, 2013 in Turkey and standing on the podium to show the Hungarian flag to the world!

In a nutshell, this is what happened.

Traditional long-range bow shooting competition was held on June 22, 2013 in Gümüshaciköy, Turkey in two categories:
- 50 pound-limit tensile strength bows competition
- Unlimited strength bows competition

- 3 shots with wooden arrows
- 60 or 80 meter wide target range

Participating countries: 14 countries with more than 200 competitors.

50 pound-limit tensile strength bows competition: I have trained for 5 months for this competition. Basically, all my energy is absorbed by the training; by all means, I wanted to reach an outstanding result in this category.

Put it simply, only exceptional fighters can shoot beyond 330 meters with a 50 pound-limit tensile strength bow and wooden arrow made by the best bow-makers of the world.

I won this event by a 467 meter winning shot that I managed to accomplish with my own home-made bow and with an arrow made of cedar given to me legendary horseback archer Lajos Kassai. Up until now, no one could reach or even get close to this result in that category.

Unlimited strength bows Competition:
The competition started with a bad experience because I could execute one shot only, due to a hand injury I suffered earlier.

I learned about the result in the ambulance.

I managed to win this event with a single shot!

At the award winning ceremony, I raised the Hungarian flag to show to the world that the Hungarian nation is alive and kicking and walking on the path that our ancestors appointed to us.

Thank you for your attention!
