Serbian chauvinist assaulted a minor on a city bus in Novi Sad because he listened to Hungarian music

Sunday, October 6, 2013

Serbian President Tomislav Nikolić said a few days ago in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg that "Hungarians have nothing to worry about in Vojvodina".

Almost the same time when these words were uttered a Hungarian boy was attacked, and assaulted on a city bus because he listened Hungarian music and browsed Hungarian websites on his cell phone.

The mother of the boy told DélHír portal that her son, 16 -year-old Oszkár N. was attacked at 1:25 pm while sitting on the bus going to Temerin. The boy attends the local Lukijan Mušicki High School.

The assailant, a middle-aged man, approximately 35-40 years of age was sitting next to the boy and noticed that Oszkár listening Hungarian music and browsing Hungarian websites on his mobile phone. The assailant jumped up and hit the boy in the face in the meantime screamed racial slurs.

After scolding the boy the assailant continued assaulting Oszkár hitting him 5 or 6 times.

Then, the boy hurried forward to the bus driver and told him what had happened, while one of the passengers called police. The attacker shrugged off the telephone call as harmless saying to passengers that he was working for the Serbian department of internal affairs; then, he left the crime scene.

Police identified the offender as they had records of the person. They showed several pictures to the victim who recognized the perpetrator.

The victim's mother said to the news portal that the family was shaken by the assault, because they have always taught their son not to hate anyone, and they did not think that anything like this could happen to them. The mother worries that police cover up the case; they were reluctant to register a complaint by the victim's family regarding the assault.

This is why the family of the victim decided to go public with the incident; they have notified the provincial ombudsman about the assault as well.

It is noteworthy that while the Serbian government paint a rosy picture of minority rights in the country to EU officials, in reality Hungarians are being attacked and assaulted on a daily basis by Serbian chauvinists with the tacit approval of authorities.
