Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival

Friday, January 10, 2014

In early November, about 10,000 workers braving the frost and the snow storm began to build the ice city of Harbin in Heilongjiang province as part of the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival by cutting 180,000 square feet of huge blocks of ice and using over 13,000 cubic metres of snow.

Harbin is located in Northeast China under the direct influence of the cold winter wind from Siberia. The average temperature in summer is 21.2 degrees Celsius, -16.8 degrees Celsius in winter. Annual low temperatures below -35C are not uncommon.
