Jamal al-Jamal took office last October. He has only recently moved to his new residence in the northern outskirts of Prague.
The blast took place seconds after ambassador Jamal al-Jamal opened his safe, the Palestinian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. (Most probably the safe was booby-trapped)
"The explosion caused serious injuries to Ambassador Jamal who was rushed to the hospital and operated on," ministry officials said in a statement.
His family was home at the time of the blast. A woman at the residence has been treated for shock and smoke inhalation as well.
The Palestinian Authority sends a delegation to the Czech Republic to join local authorities to investigate the cause of the explosion, the Palestinian Wafa news agency reported.
The blast rocked the residence shortly before noon (1100 GMT). Several police vehicles along with explosive experts, sniffer dogs and a helicopter were at the cordoned-off home of the ambassador in Prague's Suchdol neighbourhood.
