Transcarpathian Rusyns called on Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to meet the 1991 referendum decision and ensure the autonomy of Transcarpathia said Nikolai Starosta, the president of the "People's Parliament of Transcarpathia" on Facebook today.

The autonomy of Transcarpathia could remove the prevailing tension in the western part of Ukraine, and would provide peace and tranquility to the multi-ethnic region.

A call was also issued to Rusyn representatives of the Transcarpathian parliament to put the issue of autonomy on the agenda.

The Transcarpathian region is also the home of more than 150,000 ethnic Hungarians that are also seeking autonomy.
