As a result of the deal, people's militia opened a humanitarian corridor through which more than 400 Ukrainian troops safely reached Russia near Gukovo where the injured soldiers received medical attention; the rest of the troops housed in a tent camp near the border area where entered Russia.
Apparently, not all Ukrainian commanders (some had tainted backgrounds) and Georgian mercenaries were happy to accept the rebels' conditions for surrender; some strongly opposed unconditional capitulation -- they still hoped for some miracle to happen.
But ultimately they realized that their situation was hopeless and had no other choice but agree to the rebels' conditions: grudgingly accepting unconditional surrender - yesterday afternoon, Ukrainian troops started transferring their arms and other military hardware to the people's militia.
According to Itar-Tass, the deserters were given food, water and clothes, and tomorrow they will receive hot meal as well.
Ukrainian doctor Anton Singer told reporters that finally the soldiers could take a shower and rest. "We immediately got food, for which we are very grateful. The truth is that we haven't expected such a pleasant reception," said the doctor.
The physician also told reporters that many of the soldiers that crossed the border to Russia were wounded. The troops took part in fighting around the city of Krasnopartizansk, which is full of injured soldiers because "nobody evacuate the wounded." "It is practically impossible to give the wounded medical care because there is no medicine and other necessary equipment," said the physician.
Singera said: "We crossed the border to Russia to save people's lives, and personally, I do not intend to return to Ukraine in the near future."
