Hungary has concluded accession negotiations with the European Space Agency (ESA) to become full member of the international body. The Ministry of National Development said in a statement that the Treaty of Accession has been finalized at ESA Netherlands headquarters.

The government decided a year ago to join ESA. Over the past ten years Hungary extensively cooperated with ESA and already acquired the status of "cooperating European state". ESA surveyed the entire Hungarian space sector in March this year; they inspected more than 40 companies, institutes, universities and research centers.

Joining the European Space Agency Hungarian companies and organizations will be eligible to participate in international tenders announced the Space Agency.

Membership will be a big boost to Hungarian companies that are steadily increasing their contribution to global aerospace industry projects. Hungarian companies have been involved in space projects since 3-4 decades; joining ESA can give a big boost to homegrown projects as well.

Currently, ESA has been working on several advanced projects including the Galileo initiative, which is a more advanced form of GPS navigation system, the Rosetta landing spacecraft design and on a giant X-ray telescope.
