PM Viktor Orbán and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed energy issues related to the cancellation of the South Stream pipeline project by phone

Sunday, December 7, 2014

PM Viktor Orbán and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed Hungarian-Russian energy cooperation in the light of the cancellation of the South Stream pipeline project; the two leaders also discussed perspectives of bilateral relations said Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.

According to a brief news release, the Russian head of state also talked to Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic. Serbia also suffered big losses due to the cancellation of the pipeline.

Vladimir Putin announced on Monday in Ankara that Russia withdraws from the South Stream pipeline project and instead builds a new one to Turkey due to the reluctance of Brussels and Bulgaria to issue permit for the construction of the pipeline.

The cancellation of the project is the direct result of the European Union and the Bulgarian government's dirty politics aiming to permanently torpedo the project depriving the region from cheap and secure energy.
