2014 was a busy year because in the second half of the year the government had to change its plans due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and reasons relating to national sovereignty said Orbán.
"One would have thought that after winning three elections things become calmer (…). I thought so too; but this is not what happened. We can't change the fact that we live in a time like this" said the prime minister adding that in world politics the cards are being reshuffled right now, this is why the general mood is so sober in Europe, which has an impact on Hungary as well.
Regarding the corruption allegations against the Hungarian government by the US the prime minister noted that every rationally thinking person knows that the United States has made up this story because it has new interests in the region; by using the pretext of corruption, it wants to take charge of the country; this is obvious. This is why the US refuses to provide specifics on the corruption allegations. What we see is a typical secret service operation aiming to acquire control over the country Orbán said.
According to the prime minister, "We have entered into a new era,". The United States is not only interfering in the internal affairs of the Central-European countries but it has also become an active participant in the region - the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine and free trade negotiations between the European Union and the United States are being the two main reasons behind this American policy.
Energy and trade are the two main issues that can be identified where the US interests lie.
The US also wants to drag us into a conflict from which we can't get out as winners. Hungary does not want to take part in the cold war style conflict between the United States and Russia stressed the prime minister.
Hungarian foreign policy shows similarity with the German position that says: the Russian-Ukrainian conflict can't be solved without the active participation of Russia – but this is not the US position said Orbán.
The prime minister also said: “the Americans wanted to build a nuclear power plant in Hungary, but they didn't win the contract, which made them upset.”
When he was asked whether the Hungarian government considered expelling US Chargé D'affaires André Goodfriend from Hungary, PM Viktor Orbán said “there is no such specific plan”; on the other hand, the government must react to the situation. (Note: US Embassy official André Goodfriend regularly visits opposition gatherings and meets opposition leaders that are actively working towards the removal of the democratically elected government from power by pursuing an Ukrainian style scenario. The US diplomat also attended an anti-government protest a few weeks ago where violent elements vandalized Fidesz party headquarters.)
