Picture of the day: Incredible destruction in war-battered Syrian town of Ayn al-Arab

Sunday, February 1, 2015

Photo taken on Jan. 31, 2015 shows the Syrian town of Ayn al-Arab full of damaged buildings following a five-month clashes between the Kurdish fighters and the Islamic State(IS) militant group. The Kurdish militants have become in full control of the predominantly Kurdish city of Ayn al-Arab in northern Syria. A massive destruction was observed in the town, where nearly all of the buildings were crumbled during the airstrikes. The empty streets are now patrolled by Kurdish fighters and hardly any civilians were observed outside. In late 2014, the IS unleashed a widescale offensive against Ayn al-Arab due to its strategic location on the borders with Turkey. However, Kurdish fighters, aided by U.S.-led air strikes, have weakened IS control of the city. (Xinhua/Cihan)
