Russia to help Hungary train new-generation nuclear power specialists — Rosatom

The document on broader cooperation between the two countries signed on February 17 during Putin’s visit to Budapest creates a legal framework for future work in the academic and scientific spheres

MOSCOW, February 18. /TASS/. Russia will help Hungary train personnel for work in the nuclear power sector, the press office of Russia’s civilian nuclear power corporation Rosatom said on Wednesday.

A corresponding document on broader cooperation between the two countries was signed on February 17 during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Budapest.
The agreement creates a legal framework for future work in the academic and scientific spheres, Rosatom said.

"Bilateral interaction in education and science opens broad prospects," Rosatom Head Sergey Kiriyenko said.

"We offer our partners comprehensive solutions that include personnel training, apart from financing," the Rosatom head said.

Rosatom has always had close ties with Hungary’s Paks nuclear power plant and Hungarian scientific institutes and a memorandum signed by both sides gives a possibility to expand and intensify this interaction, the Rosatom head said.

Rosatom is planning jointly with Hungarian partners to organize work under educational and scientific projects both in nuclear power engineering and in associated industries, including an exchange of students, the Russian nuclear power corporation said.

Russia and Hungary agreed in January 2014 on the construction of new units for Hungary’s solely operating Paks NPP.

At the same time, Rosatom said on Tuesday it did not rule out the construction of two more units for the Paks NPP, if a relevant decision was made by the Hungarian government.

The Paks NPP is the only 2 GW nuclear power plant operating in Hungary, which accounts for 42% of electricity generated in the country, according to data posted on Rosatom’s website.

The NPP was constructed according to the Soviet design and all its four reactors are of the VVER-440 type.
