Thursday, October 8, 2015

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has visited the Hungarian military contingent in Erbil, Kurdistan, Iraq on Wednesday.

The National Assembly decided in April to send 150 advisors to Kurdistan, Iraq to help the Kurdish militia's fight against the Islamic State terrorist organization.

Hungary urges the European Union (EU) to provide an immediate $ 300 million (HUF 83 billion) to Kurdistan to help refugees whose homes were destroyed in the war; otherwise, two million more migrants could come to Europe told Szijjártó to MTI over the phone.

The Hungarian foreign minister will propose at the EU's internal and foreign ministers upcoming meeting in Luxembourg on October 8 that in addition to Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan also invite Iraq and the Kurdish region of Iraq to the next conference held on the western Balkan migration route.

Szijjártó argues that a significant portion of immigrants come to Europe from Iraq, and the same applies to Hungary as well. He emphasized that besides the Syrian refugee crisis the second worst humanitarian disaster emerging in Iraq; yet, international support is the lowest to Iraq.

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó discussed bilateral relations with the President of Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani and the region's defense and foreign ministers.

Szijjártó said there was a full agreement between the two sides on the solution of the immigration crisis - first, the causes of the crisis must be eliminated in order to eliminate the mass exodus to Europe; this means defeating the Islamic State terrorist organization and creating stability in the Middle East.

The two sides also agreed that without reaching an agreement between the United States and Russia resolution of the crisis in Syria cannot be achieved, which can have destabilizing effect on Iraq as well.
