UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres: All EU member states must follow the German example and accept as many refugees as they can

Thursday, November 5, 2015

All EU Member States should follow the example of Germany and accept as many refugees as they can said United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres in Berlin on Tuesday.

Immigration is not a German, but a European problem, therefore the entire European community must act together and share the burden of sheltering migrants.

The winter is hard in the Balkans, so everything must be done to minimize the suffering of the people heading for Europe said the commissioner.

The EU must support those Balkan states that are located along the migratory route; the EU should make efforts to prevent human traffickers from taking advantage of the situation, which is the "moral duty" of the European Union said Guterres.

The high commissioner discussed the migration crisis in Berlin with leaders of the largest international humanitarian organizations and German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The meeting has been attended by the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) William Swing, the Secretary General of the International Federation (IFRC) of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Elhadj As Sy, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General Peter Sutherland, and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) António Guterres.

According to EC autumn forecast based on the current migration data, immigration won't wide down before 2017.

The European Commission (EC) estimates that the number of migrants arriving into Europe the next year will be around three million.
