Warning to migrants – crossing the Hungarian border illegally will get you in jail

More than a thousand migrants are kept in prisons in Hungary for illegally crossing the border, which is a criminal offense according to the Hungarian criminal code.

More than seven hundred people waiting for deportation, mainly Syrian, Iraqi and Afghani citizens but Serbia refuses to take them back. Until their fate will be decided on, they must remain in jail.

Currently, about two hundred people waiting for trial in detention; this is the first time since the beginning of the refugee crisis that more people are in custody in Hungary than those housed in open refugee camps.
