Sunday, January 17, 2016

Fidesz Faction Leader Lajos Kósa confirmed to RTL TV, that the government is indeed playing with the idea of restoring mandatory conscription; but the politician also stressed that in the current situation forming a National Guard would be a better solution.

Earlier the week, House Speaker László Kövér told New People's Journal that the abolition of mandatory conscription was a catastrophic error, but to restore it we need a pan-European decision.

He also said that Hungary and Europe would be much stronger if compulsory enrollment into the military service restored, and it is a real possibility that it will take place in the not too distant future.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán denied that the government was contemplating of the re-introduction of compulsory military service in Hungary.

The issue of compulsory military service is not on the agenda and there are no plans to open a debate about it anytime soon he said.
