FM Péter Szijjártó: The European Union is heading for the precipice

Saturday, February 6, 2016

The European Union misunderstands the current situation in Europe and for months unproductive debates have been taking place in the EU on mass migration; as a result, we are no closer to a viable solution of the migration crisis said Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó on the closing day of EU foreign and defense ministers informal meeting in Amsterdam.

"We accept the idea to take into account some basic principles when discussing the migration crisis, but the ongoing mass migration has created a very serious situation in Europe that should be dealt with, but right now, we are at the point in history when we must turn our attention on protecting the public," - said the minister.

The situation in Syria does not improve; more and more people arrive at the Syrian-Turkish border, which shows that the immigration pressure on the European Union will increase in the coming months said Szijjártó.

The EU takes a huge risk by pursuing completely unproductive debates on theoretical issues meanwhile, the uncontrolled mass migration to Europe continues. This increases threats of terrorism across Europe; it may destabilize the Schengen zone and the Western Balkans as well said the minister.

If the V-4 countries, plus Macedonia and Bulgaria can reach an agreement on the line of defense aiming to defend the borders of the European Union from the southern direction on February 15 that would be a way out of the current perilous situation - stressed Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Péter Szijjártó.
