REFERENDUM WILL BE HELD ON THE MANDATORY QUOTA SYSTEM ANNOUNCED PRIME MINISTER VIKTOR ORBÁN ON WEDNESDAY’S PRESS-CONFERENCE

Wednesday, February 24, 2016

The prime minister announced the news at a press-conference held after Wednesday’s cabinet meeting.

The Hungarian people will be asked "Do you agree that the European Union should have the power to impose compulsory resettlement of non-Hungarian citizens without the Parliament's consent?" („Akarja-e, hogy az Európai Unió az Országgyűlés hozzájárulása nélkül is előírhassa nem magyar állampolgárok Magyarországra történő kötelező betelepítését?”)

The document has already been submitted to the National Electoral Commission for verification announced the prime minister.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán argued that no one can take away the Hungarian Parliament's right to control the resettlement of foreigners in the territory of Hungary - only elected representatives of the people can decide on this issue.

It is no secret that the Hungarian government rejects the compulsory quotas and those who support the referendum stand up for Hungarian independence.

"The road, that the government has chosen is the path of referendum, which is a European value, and part of European politics - we highly recommend this road to others as well" said the prime minister.

We can't decide on the fate of future generations without asking them about important issues, which affect their lives he added. The compulsory resettlement of migrants would redraw Hungary's cultural and ethnic boundaries, and no EU body has the right to do that.

Finally, he stressed that the government gave in to the demand of public opinion when called a referendum on the mandatory quota issue.

UPDATE
Jobbik welcomes the referandum.

MP Z. Kárpát Dániel announced that Jobbik supports the "no" side.

He recalled that Jobbik President Gábor Vona already raised the referendum issue last September.
