UN Working Group accusing Hungary with gender-based discrimination

Friday, May 27, 2016

According to UN Rapporteur Frances Raday, Hungary should give up gender-based discrimination disguised under the term of "conservative family values."

The UN Rapporteur said at a press conference in Budapest that discrimination against women must be treated as a serious problem.

A UN group of expert studied gender-based discrimination in Hungary between May 17 and 27.

Frances Raday explained at a press conference in Budapest that the Hungarian government must treat the issue of eliminating discrimination against women, as a priority project. The easiest way to achieve this goal is to start educating children about gender equality in schools with the help of human rights organizations and the media.

The expert reminded that the basic law guarantees women and men equal rights in Hungary, and protects the institution of family, which is essential to the survival of the nation. Although the basic unit of society, the family is indeed entitled to protection.

However, the concept of 'Conservative family values' should not be set against women's political, economic and social rights said the UN official.

According to Raday, the implementation of anti-discrimination legislation is not sufficient to eliminate the practice of gender-based discrimination in Hungary.

Social differences between women and men - the gender gap - seriously lagging behind in Hungary; in this regard, Hungary is at the 99th place on the list of 145 countries she pointed out.

Women in Hungary are significantly marginalized in political life, since only 10 percent of parliamentarians are women and the Hungarian government has not one minister that represents the opposite sex. This situation is due to the pervasive, and obvious stereotyping of women in Hungarian society said the UN official.
