The silver medal went to USA’s Kathleen Baker and the bronze medal went to Canada’s Kylie Masse and China’s Fu Yuanhui.

Katinka claimed her second gold of the meet with a final time of 58.45 over Baker’s 58.75.

"I knew that in the 100m backstroke anything can happen. A small mistake and it is all over, there is no time to fix the mistake. However, I also knew if I swim intelligently, I can win a medal, but I did not necessarily think of a gold medal." said Katinka in a press-conference after the event.

The victory didn't even have time to sink in because on the podium I was thinking of the 200m IM qualifier, which came up an hour later said Katinka.

Katinka said the 100m back was a special victory for her. "Everything has its own beauty; the 400-meter IM victory was exactly what I dreamed of. I said to myself how good it would be if fifty meters before the finish I was Olympic champion like Krisztina Egerszegi..."
