GOVT TO TURN COMMUNIST-ERA CAMPS INTO MEMORIAL SITES

Friday, November 18, 2016

The government has decided to reconstruct communist-era internment, forced labour and POW camps and declare them as memorial sites, the government office chief announced.

The national memorial park of Recsk will be completely refurbished. The decision also concerns the internment camp of Kistarcsa, a suburb of Budapest, and the POW camp of Cegléd in central Hungary, János Lázár said at his weekly press conference.

It is still a matter of discussion as to whether the 1950-1953 forced labour camps of Hortobágy, in eastern Hungary, will be involved in the programme, he said.
