Hungarian foreign policy in 2017 could be more daring than you think

Monday, January 30, 2017

In an interview with Kossuth Radio, Foreign Minister Péter Szíjjártó hinted bold changes in Hungarian foreign policy in 2017. The transformation of the global political landscape currently underway may trigger foreign policy changes that may turn out to be nothing less than spectacular.

US foreign policy will take a more realistic direction under the Trump administration, and as a result, US-Russian bilateral relations are expected to improve; but Europe will continue to decline as its ruling elite doesn’t want to understand what’s happening in the world, which is in fact, in an unprecedented flux.

Hungarian foreign policy will move swiftly to adjust to the ongoing global changes; the adjustment may even turn out to be stunning compared to earlier approaches said the foreign minister.

The United States is expected to pursue a more patriotic and more pragmatic economic policy implying a more realistic approach in world affairs.

Meanwhile, Brexit is expected to further weaken the European Union that will continue focusing on irrelevant issues consuming all of its creative energies that would be badly needed elsewhere.

In addition, China is going to continue its world-wide economic expansion this year - Szíjjártó added.

All in all, these developments in world affairs foreshadow massive political transformation in the global arena. Hungarian foreign policy is expected to quickly adopt those changes in order that the country benefit the most from the emerging new world order said the foreign minister.
