Sunday, February 5, 2017

During the Thursday prayer breakfast in Washington, Balog had a casual conversation with newly appointed US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Balog told MTI that they agreed that US - Hungarian relations should be placed on new foundation. Tillerson told the Hungarian minister that in the United States not only those voted for the new president, but a much broader segment of American society is also hoping that with the election of Donald Trump America actually enters into a new era.

Balog told the new secretary of state that the Hungarian government wanted to open a new chapter in US - Hungarian relations.

On the question of whether the prayer breakfast can contribute to forging personal relations among participants Balog said that this was in fact one of the deliberate aims of the event event even if discussing actual political issues was not part of the agenda.

"I find it hard to imagine that if two politicians meet in a joint prayer they can insult each other" - said the Hungarian minister.

Balog revealed that the Hungarian government plans to organize the first Hungarian national prayer breakfast this fall jointly with the opposition where foreign guests will also be invited.

Zoltán Balog also met Republican Congresswoman Martha Roby who is one of the most prominent actors of the American pro-life movement; they exchanged views on the upcoming Budapest Demographic Second World Forum this spring.
