It seems that the practice of recent decades to install a political appointee to the ambassadorial position will continue under the Trump administration as well.
The last US Ambassador to Budapest, Soap Opera Producer Colleen Bell was also a political appointee, she was one of Barack Obama’s chief campaign fundraisers.
Recently, Magyar Nemzet has reported that a Hungarian-American group lobbying for former New York State Republican Governor George Pataki, but according to sources his chances to get the job are very slim.
Rumor mill suggesting that one possible candidate for the job is former Television News Anchorwoman and Washington State Republican Party Chairwoman Susan Hutchinson who was one of the chief fundraisers of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.
Hutchinson was also one of the curators of Hungary Initiative Foundation until 2004, as well as the Executive Director of Charles and Lisa Simonyi Foundation for the Arts and Sciences.
The other possible candidate for the job is Quinnipiac University Professor Christopher Ball. Ball is the director of the University’s Central European Institute International Relations Department; and since 2013, he is the Honorary Consul of Hungary in the state of Connecticut.
At the time of his appointment as honorary consul, among others things, he said he had fallen in love with Hungary, and felt at home in the country; he has been researching Hungary and the entire central European region for twenty years.
Ball indeed closely linked to Hungary; in 1994 he moved to Budapest, and for sometime he taught at ELTE and was the former president of the Hungarian Atlantic Council. He speaks Hungarian fluently, and his wife is Transylvanian Hungarian.
