FM Péter Szijjártó: Hungary vetoes EU development strategy that calls for the promotion of mass migration

Wednesday, May 10, 2017

The EU is planning to adopt a development strategy that promotes mass migration but, Hungary will veto the adoption of the bill, said Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó to MTI on Wednesday.

The EU foreign ministers will meet in Brussels on Thursday and plan to adopt a document, which includes a paragraphs like "well-managed mass migration and mobility can make a positive contribution to growth and sustainable development, and this favorable contribution must be utilized."

The document also states that the EU can benefit from migration and the mobility of migrants' due to their skills and knowledge. The document calls for close cooperation of EU member states in promoting "safe and responsible migration and people mobility" as well as the implementation of a comprehensive strategy to "maximize synergies come from mass migration," said Szijjártó.

Hungary had announced its intention to veto the document Wednesday morning, which caused "an outrage among member states". The Council of Permanent Representatives' meeting was suspended in the morning due to the announcement of the veto; the presidency and several member states are pressuring Hungary to withdraw the veto said Szijjártó.

But Hungary won't approve a development strategy that calls immigration as a positive thing. We do not agree with the document also because it calls on the EU and its member states to promote mass migration, the foreign minister added.

Szijjártó emphasized that "immigration is a bad thing," it brought a great deal of danger to the continent, and it endangers the security of Europe; so Hungary is doing its best to stop mass migration and has no intention of supporting a document that promotes this phenomenon.
