Hungary has vetoed the NATO-Ukraine Summit scheduled for December

Friday, October 27, 2017

Hungary doesn't support Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic aspirations anymore and has vetoed the NATO-Ukraine Summit scheduled for December said Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade on Friday's press conference in Budapest.

Szijjártó emphasized that until the beginning of September, Hungary was one of the loudest and most active supporters of Ukraine's Euro-Atlantic integration, but this is not the case anymore. Hungary considers the adoption of the new Ukrainian Education Act as "backstabbing".

The foreign minister recalled that when the Ukrainian Parliament adopted the Education Act, Hungary indicated that Hungarian diplomacy will use all possible means to pressure Ukraine to revoke the law, which "brutally restricts" the rights of minorities living in the country.

The law is a serious step back in the area of minority rights, and we can't let it pass without making our opposition heard.

The foreign minister stated: Hungary is still ready for consultation but can't accept the fact that the law has greatly reduced the rights of minorities in Ukraine.

"The stakes are high", a draft law on language and citizenship are also on the agenda of the Ukrainian parliament that threatens the rights of the Hungarian community even more; if Hungary doesn't act right now, this will serve as an encouragement for Ukraine to continue adopting anti-minority legislation in the future.

Szijjártó added that diplomatic steps similar to the current one will continue, until Transcarpathian Hungarians indicate that their rights are respected once again.

There is no way to circumvent the Hungarian veto because unanimity was needed to convene the NATO-Ukraine Committee. Those who familiar with international politics understand that all nations pursue their own national interests first, so Hungary can't be modest in this regard either Szijjártó said.
