Monday, December 4, 2017

Three-time Olympic Champion and thirty-one-time World Champion Kayaker Katalin Kovács was officially inducted in the Hall of Immortal Hungarian Athletes on Thursday.

Kovács was honored by the President of the Hungarian Kayak Canoe Association Gábor Schmidt.

Katalin Kovács started her career in Budapest Spartacus Aquatic Club; according to her own account, she wasn't a talented kid; she attributed her world-fame to her diligence and persistence.

As an athlete her motto was: "always do what you believe in and believe in what you do." Kovács retired from active competition this year but she remained active by supporting young athletes; her exemplary career is an inspiration to many young people said Gábor Schmidt.

"I did not think I was going to be touched so much by this honor. I do not even remember when this happened to me the last time," said the new member of the club.

I am very proud to belong to this famous club. As a kid I never believed I could be a great champion, but as I progressed I felt more and more that the goal was within reach. I did my best to make my dreams come true. I feel good that I can be a role model for both children and adults," she said.

The Hall of Immortal Hungarian Athletes has 21 members; if someone dies the membership chooses a new member. The honorable title does not give any extra remuneration to members.

The current membership include:

Tamás Darnyi, Antal Dunai, Krisztina Egerszegi, Tamás Faragó, Tamás Wichmann, Zsolt Gyulay, Csaba Hegedűs, Jenő Kamuti, György Kárpáti, Ágnes Keleti, Katalin Kovács, Győző Kulcsár, Zoltán Magyar, Judit Polgár, Ildikó Rejtő, István Vaskuti, Éva Székely, Ferenc Török, Tímea Nagy, and Tamás Kásás.
