Juncker: Visegrad countries can play a leading role in the EU if complying with the rules

The Visegrád countries can play a leading role in the European Union if they respect the common rules said Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission to ARD public service television on Tuesday; the Visegrad counties should not be intimidated by threats of reducing EU subsidies and in the case of distribution of refugees, it should be taken into account that Poland has already accepted many refugees from Ukraine.

The President of the European Council made these remarks on the occasion of a meeting with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki in Brussels on Tuesday; he stessed that the dispute over the situation in the rule of law in Poland should not be settled in a "warlike mood" by issuing "wild threats" but with calm dialogue.

It would not be appropriate to threaten the Visegrad countries with reduction of EU subsidies and let the Central European Member States feel that "Western Europe alone leads the European Union," said Juncker.

The Conservative Luxembourg politician said he sought to reduce the "gap" between Central Europe and the rest of the EU because "the EU must breathe with two lungs, with the East and the West".

He added that regardless, Poland and Hungary should also be participate in the distribution of refugees among Member States on the basis of joint decisions.

It is unacceptable for a Member State to declare that it does not allow "people of color, homosexuals, or Muslims" in its territory because it "seriously violates European values," said the President of the European Council.
