Women have been banned from driving in Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan has banned women from driving cars. Turkmen police started warning female drivers in December about the new law.

The new regulation went into effect in January; violators' driver's license get confiscated and the owner of the vehicle must pay a hefty fine. Female police officers also had to sign a statement agreeing to refrain from driving police cruisers.

Apparently, the ban triggered by Turkmen Minister of Interior report on traffic accident - the minister informed President Gurbanguli Berdimuhamedov that most traffic accidents are caused by female drivers.

Another change is that Turkmenistan has banned the use of dark-colored vehicles, but it is not clear what is behind that ban.
