Musical about Trianon - the partition of Hungary after the first world war

Tuesday, March 27, 2018

Two years ago, in June 2016, "Itt élned, halnod kell" rock opera was premiered at Heroes square directed by Gábor Koltay. In the same place a new historical musical called "Trianon" will be performed on June 22 and 23. The songwriter of the musical is the leader of the Kormoran Rock Band Gergely Koltay.

I find that many people do not really know what actually happened on June 4, 1920, when the peace treaty was signed in Versailles that ended the First World War, when Hungary has lost more than half of its population and two-thirds of its territory said the director of the musical Gábor Koltay at a press conference in Budapest.

In addition to reinforcing historical knowledge, the other goal of the musical is to call on "all compatriots to get together and have a common understanding of the event for the survival and advancement of our nation", at the forthcoming 100th anniversary of the national tragedy. Let's talk about the root causes of the Trianon tragedy, and its after-effects that affect our everyday lives even today said the director.

We have to find ways how to unite and stick together spiritually, culturally and economically in this changing world intensified by ongoing global tension.

Today, in every neighboring countries - who benefited from the partition of Hungary - there are individuals who are willing to help the process of lifting the trauma of Trianon without inflammatory accusations said Koltai.

The story embraces one hundred-year-time-period, presenting history through the lives of a few divided families to show how our lives have been fundamentally influenced by what happened in 1920.

The production does not focus on historically important moments of the period, but it discusses the tragedy from a much more personal point of view.

Fifteen singers, twenty actors, two hundred dancers, one hundred extras, thirty horseback riders and forty acrobats will be participating in the spectacle.

Elaborate stages will be built in front of the Seven Chieftains of the Magyars Sculpture Group and two huge LED screens will also be set up said the director.

The musical divided into four parts, compiled from textbooks, memories of survivors, historical documents, and poems by Hungarian authors.

The first part introduces the period from the Millennium to the end of the First World War summarizing the history of the era that led to Trianon.

The second part deals with the period from 1920 to the end of the Second World War.

The third part depicts the decades after 1945, when the Rákosi and Kádár regimes wanted to erase the event from the memory of the nation.

And the fourth part discusses the period after the collapse of the communist system up until Hungary joining the European Union and the following years when the National Assembly adopted the Law on the Day of National Unity, and the Trianon Memorial Day.
